Videoscope News: Getting Green

Green Initiatives at Videoscope

Moving to our new location at 100 Howden gave Videoscope an opportunity to get greener. We're counting the ways, and looking for more.

1. Freecycle: All the furniture we could no longer use was posted to the website FreecycleTOAnyone who wanted items could to pick them up.  From the young woman who was setting up her first home office, to the Somalian group that was sending a container of furniture to the school they sponsor in their homeland, we were delighted to so see good items get a new home.

2. Eco-Friendlier Building: One of our first requirements for the building renovation was enlarging the windows along the east side, to provide daylight for the front office area. Thermal insulated windows with UV protection and blinds that filter the sun but don't block the light give us a bright, warm atmosphere. Programmed thermostats for air conditioning and heating reduce energy use in off hours.

3. Recycling:  It takes multiple programs to be a good recycler but they've all fallen into place at 100 Howden.

The Rental and Staging Department lead the way. Battery recycling has been in place for years. The Battery Broker Environmental Services Inc. charges by the pound to pick up used batteries. The company is certified by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for handling this hazardous waste.  "Every year the Battery Broker diverts over 500,000 Lbs. of waste batteries from our landfills, thus preventing the release of harmful toxins into the environment." (
www.batterybroker.on.ca) All types of batteries used by Videoscope are recycled.

Our "Blue Box" program takes care of paper, cans, plastic, glass. Cardboard has its own collection bin for recycling pick-up.

Printer cartridges go to ECO-REZ Inc., a Mississauga company which pays cash for them. According to www.ecorez.com their empty cartridge retrieval program is responsible for the collection of approximately 130,000 units each year across Canada.

Obsolete or non-functional computer equipment is turned over to Texserv. This Quebec-based company does most of the recycling processes in house, with its own staff and promises: "We make sure none of your equipment ever sees landfill; we insure and guarantee everything is 100% recycled."

4. Going Digital: To reduce paper use Videoscope News, promotions, quotes, collection follow-up and brochures are all sent electronically. Our sales reps, staging crews and installers are provided with digital cameras for site checks and documentation.

5. Lead Free: The lead is out of Videoscope. As a Sony professional dealer, we sell only "green" equipment. Some cameras have shed as much as 9 pounds in the conversion to non-lead products.
