Sheridan XDCAM HD Student Project
The Piano Lesson

In March 2007, Videoscope was involved in a project with Sheridan College Students.
Anant Baveja, the DOP, sent photos and this account of their experience.

Inside A Student Film: The Making of Piano Lesson by Anant Baveja

About a month ago, on our first day of filming, we had the worst snowstorm in recent history. It was nothing short of a miracle that all the cast and crew made it to the set on time. If that's not great luck, what is?

We had decided to go HD with Piano Lesson. The only option at the time was to shoot it on the Panasonic HVX 200 that the college had recently acquired, using the Redrock 35mm adapter and film or SLR primes. It would have looked very nice but the workflow wouldn't have been smooth, due to the timecode and audio sync issues. It meant a lot of hassles in post, and none of the technical crew was very keen on that. We wanted to shoot with the Sony F330/350, but as student projects go, we were very tight with funds.

Little did we know another miracle was about to happen.

Zoe Dirse (CSC), our Camera Professor at Sheridan, introduced us to Larry Au, a Sales Rep at Videoscope. Larry was very generous and threw the doors open to us, making arrangements with the Rental Department. You wouldn't believe the kind of support we got at Videoscope. We were able to book any gear from the camera, light and the grip sections.

We also spent a few hours with Joe Freitas, discussing our shots while Joe suggested possible lights and grips required for a particular setup. It was one of the most informative sessions I've had outside of school.

Piano Lesson was shot XDCAM HD on the PDW-F330 we got from Videoscope.
Piano Lesson is a film about Christina, a brilliant pianist in her late teens. Of late she has lost her passion for playing as she copes with the pressures of growing up and trying to live up to the expectations of her dad, Bruce. Bruce wants Christina playing again and arranges for Charles to tutor her. He is a former piano legend who has fallen into bad times due to a debilitating accident. But Charles has a condition that the training take place at his modest house, something that Christina is completely reluctant about. The film then explores the relationship and bonding that Christina develops with Charles and his daughter Sania; how she comes to terms with her own feelings and gets back to playing the piano.
We just got into post and in a couple of weeks we'll be looking at the finished film. I would like to take this opportunity and thank Larry Au, team Videoscope, Zoe Dirse (my mentor and friend), the faculty at Sheridan and the cast and crew of Piano Lesson. Without your help, support, advice and participation we wouldn't have our film.
