For the professional Director
of Photography,
Camera Operator, or Videographer, Sony
XDCAM HD and EX are high def options well worth exploring.
Sony is expanding the XDCAM HD series with the
PDW-700, a 2/3
inch CCD camcorder and the
PDW-HD1500 recording deck.
HD recording can go up to 50Mb/s with MPEG-2 4:2:2 P@HL compression. See the
Sony XDCAM HD422
brochure. (This PDF requires Acrobat Reader
7.0)
XDCAM HD was developed by Sony
to bring an innovative workflow to professional high def production
with a cost effective solution. The video is crisper and clearer than
HDV. To achieve this and still keep the data rate low enough to make storage
affordable, it uses MPEG2 long GOP encoding. The resolution is 1080i. It can
be recorded at 18 megabits per second, 25 mbps (the same as HDV) and 35 mbps
(acceptable for some broadcast applications). At the same time it
records "proxy files," a low resolution version of the A/V data, at
2 megabits per second. These files can be transferred via IP for editing
while the camera is still in the field.
